Tell us about your business

My co-founder (Nicki) and I are a boutique law firm specialising in family law - we provide support across family law specifically divorce, civil partnership, separation, nuptial agreements, cohabitation, finances and children matters. I am also a mediator. The second branch of our firm is private client services - Wills, Probate and later life planning - headed up by the very lovely Madeline.

When did you start your business?

More than 3 years ago.

What made you want to start your own business?

Autonomy to work in a way that meets the individual needs of our clients and for ourselves and our families. Nicki and I wanted to build a firm that embodied our values as lawyers together with those of us as individuals.

Tell us about your kids?

I have 2 very energetic boys, 8 and 4. I also can’t forget my cockerpoo - Monty (11).

How do you manage the juggle of running your business around being a mum?

I'd love to say I have this nailed, but I am constantly striving to be better and get more of a balance. I am sure this will resonate with many Founder Mums but its rare that I end the week feeling I've got it right, but equally telling myself I shouldn't be so hard on myself! I am passionate about what I do and committed to building a firm that offers a compassionate and family & client focussed service. The commitment that requires is huge.

What have been the high points of your business journey so far?

We've just celebrated 3 years which is just amazing! We have lovely clients and a brilliant support network around us - we've reached the point where we feel comfortable expanding and building our team which is exhilarating and petrifying in equal measure.

What has been or is the biggest challenge in your journey as a Founder so far?

Knowing when to delegate and to take the plunge and take on staff. It's so easy as the founder of a new and growing business to take responsibility for everything and anything. Learning to let go, delegate and grow the team (ideally before you even realise you need to!) is a definite challenge.

Are you interested in collaborating with other Founder Mums?

Absolutely. From a professional services side - anyone working with families or can offer clients coaching, financial services etc. From a human side - anyone working in complementary and wellbeing services. Its so important for us all to be mindful and aware that people may be going through difficult times personally, and there's a myriad of ways to support them.

What are your core values when it comes to your business?

Clients first, transparency, empathy and compassion and excellence in our practice areas. We pride ourselves on our knowledge and skills to adapt to client needs and circumstances. We don't put our clients in a box.

What marketing tactics have worked best for you?

Personal interactions without a doubt - building lasting relationships whether personal or professional. The majority of our work is referral based so this is really important to us.

And finally, what has been the biggest lesson for you since you started your business and what's your best bit of advice for other Founder Mums?

(1) Learning to let go and delegate. You can't do it all. (2) You have to be prepared to learn new skills and step out of your comfort zone - social media - argh! (3) Anticipating what you need before you need it - we are still trying to get on top of this one!
