Meet Suzy, Founder of Wish Freelance Writing

Feb 26, 2025

Tell us about your business

I provide copywriting and SEO support to small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to improve their website's visibility but don't know where to start. I have a course, Power Hours and a mini SEO audit for those who want to learn how to do it themselves, and blog packages and PR templates for those who don't have time to do it themselves.

What made you want to start your own business?

My kids. I wanted a career that gave me the flexibility to be able to be around for them when they needed me, not just when I could book in leave. My previous career was as a civil service lawyer which provided little or no flexibility in terms of working times and being able to take time off at short notice - holidays during school holiday periods had to be booked a year in advance! I didn't want my family to fit around my work so I took the plunge and handed my notice in so I could build a business that worked around them. I'm getting there but it's been a steep learning curve!

Tell us about your kids?

I'm mum via adoption to two beautiful sisters who crept into our hearts four years apart. They've both been with us since they were babies and are now 11 and 6.

How do you manage the juggle of running your business around being a mum?

Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don't and accepting that has been a big part of the juggle. I'm learning to be much better at planning and blocking off time in my diary and to let go of the things that really don't matter that much in the grand scheme of things. The nature of my work means I can do it in evenings or weekends if I need to so I can take time off for school events and I do the school runs every day which is something I couldn't do in my old job.

What have been the high points of your business journey so far?

Connecting with some amazing women and seeing how my services have helped them grow their business too.

What has been or is the biggest challenge in your journey as a Founder so far?

Learning how to do business! I was extremely naive when I started and didn't realise how many different aspects of business I'd need to know about to have a sustainable business. I've learned a lot through courses and scouring the internet for the answer, and more recently, I've accepted that it's ok to ask for help. I've recently invested in coaching support which is a huge financial outlay and feels scary, but I know it's the right thing to help me build in the way I want to. The biggest lesson has been accepting I can't do everything.

Are you interested in collaborating with other Founder Mums?

Yes, I'd love to collaborate. Ideally it would be with Founder Mums who create websites or provide business foundations support.

What are your core values when it comes to your business?

Honesty, integrity, family, reliability and a good dose of humour.

What marketing tactics have worked best for you?

Joining the Natwest Accelerator Programme which has opened my eyes to the world of networking, in-person events and the power of collaboration. Being consistent in being visible and having conversations rather than trying to turn every connection into a sale have worked well as that's how I like to be sold to.

And finally, what has been the biggest lesson for you since you started your business and what's your best bit of advice for other Founder Mums?

Don't be afraid to ask for help and find your tribe.
