Do Vision Boards Really Work?

fmc events grow Feb 18, 2024

Are you sceptical about the effectiveness of vision boards? Perhaps you've heard of them, but you're not convinced that they can actually help you manifest your dreams and goals. I've done some digging to explore the scientific evidence behind vision boards that support the claim that they work.

The Power of Visualization

Visualization is a technique that has been used by athletes, performers, and successful businesspeople for decades. It involves creating a mental image of the desired outcome and focusing on it with intention and emotion. The idea behind visualization is that by imagining yourself achieving your goals, you're training your brain to believe that it's possible.

Multiple studies have found that visualization can have a positive impact on performance. For example, a study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that athletes who used visualization techniques improved their performance by 23% compared to those who didn't use visualization. Another study published in the Journal of Sports Sciences found that visualization can improve strength, endurance, and accuracy in athletes.

The Power of Intention

Intention is a powerful force that can help you achieve your goals. When you set an intention, you're sending a clear message to the universe about what you want to manifest in your life. By creating a vision board, you're setting an intention in a visual and tangible way.

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that setting intentions can increase goal achievement. In the study, participants who wrote down their goals were more likely to achieve them than those who didn't write them down.

The Power of Positive Thinking

The Law of Attraction is the belief that like attracts like. In other words, the energy you put out into the universe will attract similar energy back to you. So, if you focus your thoughts and emotions on positive things, you'll attract positive experiences and opportunities into your life.

A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who practiced positive thinking techniques, such as gratitude journaling and visualizing positive outcomes, experienced more positive emotions and greater life satisfaction.

The Neuroscience of How Vision Boards Work

The brain is a complex organ that is constantly processing information from the environment and generating thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The process of creating a vision board involves visualizing your goals and desires, selecting images that represent them, and arranging them in a way that is visually appealing and motivating. This process engages several key areas of the brain that are involved in motivation, attention, and memory.

One of the key areas of the brain involved in the creation of vision boards is the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning, decision-making, and goal-directed behaviour. When you visualize your goals and desires, you activate this area of the brain and prime it for action. This primes the brain to focus on the task at hand and make decisions that are in line with your goals and desires.

Another area of the brain that is involved in the creation of vision boards is the limbic system, which is responsible for emotions, motivation, and reward processing. When you select images that evoke positive emotions and represent your desired outcomes, you activate the limbic system and release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is associated with pleasure and reward. This creates a positive association with your goals and motivates you to work towards achieving them.

Research has also shown that visualizing and creating a visual representation of your goals can improve memory and cognitive processing. When you arrange images on a vision board, you are creating a visual mnemonic device that helps your brain remember your goals and desires. This can help you stay focused on your goals and make decisions that are consistent with achieving them.

In addition to these neural mechanisms, vision boards can also impact your behaviour in other ways. By creating a visual representation of your goals and desires, you are creating a sense of accountability and commitment to yourself. This can motivate you to take action towards achieving your goals and increase your self-efficacy, or belief in your ability to succeed.

Putting It All Together

So, how do vision boards fit into all of this? Vision boards combine the power of visualization, intention, and positive thinking into one powerful tool for manifesting your dreams and goals.

By creating a visual representation of your intentions, you're training your brain to believe that your goals are possible. By focusing on positive images and words, you're attracting positive energy into your life. And by setting clear intentions and taking action towards your goals, you're increasing your chances of success.

In conclusion, while vision boards may seem like a New Age fad, there is scientific evidence to support their effectiveness. Still sceptical? Why not give it a try and see for yourself? You may be surprised by the results.
